As with everything in life there are a number of forms and documents that need to be filled out in order to satisfy state requirements.
These forms are typically taken care of by your funeral director. If you are taking care of this yourself, the forms can be obtained from the Department of Internal Affairs.
New Zealand law requires that the execution of a Will is subject to Probate. This is essentially permission from the High Court for the executors to deal with the person’s estate and matters relating to their passing as per the instructions left in their Will. This process is normally looked after by the person’s solicitor. The Law Society or Public Trust Office can provide further advice on Wills. A Registered Death Certificate is issued by the Department of Internal Affairs once the death has been notified to them. This usually takes around ten working days.
